A ring is to be understood as conformally equivalent to an annulus. The problem when a ring contains an annulus has been studied in the plane, for example in [\textit{D. Herron} et al., J. Anal. Math. 53, 233--252 (1989; Zbl 0697.30021)]. The goal of this paper is to obtain higher-dimensional analogues of the planar results. One highlight of the paper is the extension of Teichmüller's theorem to higher dimensions. Skipping the technical details, I would like to repeat the description the authors give: Teichmüller's theorem states that a ring in \(\mathbb{R}^2=\mathbb{C}\) with large enough modulus should contain an annular ring of equal modulus up to a bounded term. The authors give an extension to higher-dimensional Euclidean spaces and show moreover that the obtained constant for the modulus is sharp. An application of the result characterizes uniform perfectness with the help of the existence of annuli of certain moduli. A further consequence is an inequality bounding the diameter of the smaller component of the complement in terms of the distance of the two components and the modulus of the corresponding ring. The authors also consider semirings. The main result concerning them is again a separation theorem bounding the diameters of the connected components of the complement in terms of the modulus. The last part of the paper shifts away the focus from sets to mappings. With the help of the results about rings, the authors obtain various results concerning the extension of homeomorphisms to the boundary. For example extensions of quasiconformal mappings are studied.
