The first inverse problem is the following. Assume that \\(X\\) is a smooth connected compact manifold with boundary. Then the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for the Laplacian is an elliptic pseudodifferential operator of first order \\(N:C^\\infty(\\partial X)\\to C^\\infty(\\partial X)\\). If \\(U\\) is a non-empty open subset of \\(\\partial X\\), then the authors show that the restriction of \\(N\\) to the set of smooth functions with support in \\(U\\) already determines \\(X\\) up to isometry.  The second inverse problem deals with conformally compact Einstein manifolds. Such a manifold is the interior of a compact manifold with boundary \\(X\\), equipped with a metric \\(g\\) (defined in the interior of \\(X\\)), such that for a boundary defining function \\(\\rho\\), the metric \\(\\rho^2 g\\) extends to a metric on the manifold with boundary. The hyperbolic spaces are examples for such spaces. On such conformally compact spaces a similar inverse problem is solved. Here the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is replaced by the scattering
