The authors consider conformally symplectic systems within the class of dissipative mechanical systems. From a geometric viewpoint, conformally symplectic systems take a symplectic form into a multiple of itself. If the conformal factor is less than one, a conformal system contracts the form and is dissipative. The authors claim that theirs may be the first paper where non-twist tori in dissipative systems are considered. Dissipative mechanical systems on the torus, with friction that is proportional to the velocity, are naturally modeled by conformal symplectic maps on the annulus with a conformal factor less than one. For such systems it is desirable to try to identify the structure of the attractors and determine the kinds of dynamics that can occur there. Throughout the paper the phase space is the manifold \(\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}\), where \(\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\). A conformally symplectic map on \(\mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}\), with conformal factor \(\sigma \in (0, 1)\), is formally defined as a diffeomorphism \(F: \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}\) that is homotopic to the identity and such that for all \(z \in \mathbb{T} \times \mathbb{R}\), det\( [DF(z)] = \sigma\). The authors' development begins with defining twist and non-twist invariant tori for families of conformally symplectic systems. They then describe how these definitions can be interpreted in terms of dynamical properties. Much of the authors' efforts are devoted to developing the theory in a form that is amenable to algorithms for computation. The description of algorithms that compute twist and non-twist invariant tori and examples that show their implementation constitute about half of the paper.
