The main aim of this paper is to study a class of partial difference equations with sign-changing mixed nonlinearities and unbounded potentials. More precisely, the authors consider the equation (\((m, n)\in \mathbb{Z}^{2}\)) \[ -\Delta_{1}^{2}u(m-1, n)-\Delta_{2}^{2}u(m, n-1)+\omega(m, n)u(m, n)= f(m, n, u(m, n)), \] assuming \[ \lim_{|m|+|n|\to +\infty}u(m, n)=0 \] for the unknown function \(u\). The main results of the paper are Theorems 1.1 and 1.2, where the authors show some sufficient conditions under which existence and multiplicity of homoclinic solutions can be obtained by using critical point theory. In particular, if the conditions \[ \omega(m, n)\to +\infty \, \text{as}\, |m|+|n|\to \infty, \] and \[ \omega_{\ast}= \min \left\{\omega(m, n)\, \vert \, (m, n)\in \mathbb{Z}^{2} \right\}>0\tag{\(\Omega\)} \] hold, the nonlinearity \(f\) fulfills assumptions \((F_{1})\)--\((F_{4})\) in the paper, and there exists a constant \(c_{\ast}\) such that \(c(m, n)\geq c_{\ast} > \dfrac{\omega_{\ast}}{2}+2\) for all \((m, n)\in \mathbb{Z}^{2}\), then the above partial difference equation has at least one nontrivial homoclinic solution. Moreover, if instead of the last assumption one has \(c(m, n)> \dfrac{\omega(m, n)}{2}+4\) for all \((m, n)\in \mathbb{Z}^{2}\), then the above partial difference equation has infinitely many high energy homoclinic solutions.
