As is easily checked the solution should be 2.113215, however, K\u00e4stner's result as displayed is 2.108315. The author of the present paper discusses not only what Gau\u00df\\ thought about K\u00e4stner, but also what others thought about his mathematical abilities. The cartoon obviously shows that Gau\u00df\\ did not think very highly of K\u00e4stner and in fact there are passages in letters where he spoke quite frankly about what he thought of K\u00e4stner's mathematical skills. However, in other letters Gau\u00df\\ praised K\u00e4stner's character. As Karin Reich has pointed out elsewhere, Gau\u00df\\ owned and read several of the mathematical works of K\u00e4stner. Gau\u00df\\ also read and corrected K\u00e4stner's \\textit{Astronomische Abhandlungen} (Astronomical treatises) and, following Reich, Gau\u00df\\ viewed K\u00e4stner as an incompetent astronomer. However, there is no true sign that Gau\u00df\\ did not value K\u00e4stner as a person. He sent K\u00e4stner two copies of his dissertation and kept correspondence for some time. As a matter of fact K\u00e4stner was highly praised by contemporaries and his many mathematical textbooks have helped to shape new generations of mathematicians. The cartoon is certainly a true student joke, but K\u00e4stner was an old man when Gau\u00df\\ took lectures with him. He was close to the end of his life while Gau\u00df\\ was at the beginning of his.
