A design method for state feedback control is presented. By splitting the design into a linear part treated by the Riccati-approach and a nonlinear part based on the solution of a Lyapunov equation ``practical'' stability can be guaranteed. Both design parts are combined by a suitable choice of weighting matrices.    For controller design it is assumed that the full state is available. This constraint is relaxed by introducing a special observer with low sensivity. As is shown in the paper system stability is conserved.    The design method is illustrated by an application to the suspension control of a maglev vehicle. Simulation results are
