The author improves Kirk's fixed point theorem for asymptotic contractions, \textit{W. A. Kirk} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 277, No. 2, 645--650 (2003; Zbl 1022.47036)] under weaker assumptions without the use of ultrafilter methods; he generalizes the result by considering upper semicontinuity of \(\phi\) and one of the \(\phi_n\)'s instead of continuity for \(\phi\) and all \(\phi_n\) where \(\phi_n:[0,\infty]\rightarrow[0,\infty]\). If we have \(\limsup_{t\rightarrow\infty}(\phi(t)/t)<1\), then the assumption of the existence of a bounded orbit in Theorem 2.2 \textit{W. A. Kirk} [loc. cit.] can be removed.
