\(B\)-series provide a powerful tool to express numerical methods for differential equations. Many differential equations are of Hamiltonian form and there has been much recent interest in constructing so-called canonical or symplectic integrators for the Hamiltonian case. In this paper a necessary and sufficient condition is provided for a \(B\)-series to correspond to a canonical method.
