The author considers the system of equations \[ {\mathcal L} u={\mathcal N}_s(u), \] where \({\mathcal L}\) is a ``diagonal'' operator \({\mathcal L} =\{{\mathbf L} u_1, \dots, {\mathbf L} u_n\}\) generated by an unbounded linear operator \({\mathbf L}\) and \({\mathcal N}_s(u)\) is a system of nonlinear mappings depending on the real parameter \(s\). This problem simulates a system of semilinear wave equations. The paper presents a number of local bifurcation results for the problem in terms of the spectral properties of the original operator \({\mathbf L}\). The basic tool is a variant of the topological degree for quasimonotone mappings developed earlier by the author.
