The phenomenon of rigidity of CR embeddings of real hypersurfaces into quadrics has been studied in classical and recent works. In particular, the first author and different coauthors have proved that under various conditions the image of such embeddings is contained in a complex plane of lower dimension. In the paper under review the authors prove a result along these lines. They consider embeddings of a Levi-nondegenerate hypersurface \(M\) with signature \(l\) into a hyperquadric of signature \(l'\) in \(N\)-dimensional space and prove that the image is contained in a complex plane with a dimension depending only on the CR complexity and the signature difference, but not on \(N\). Here CR complexity means the difference between the smallest possible CR-dimension of a target quadric, for which an embedding exists, and the CR dimension of \(M\). Previous results deal with the cases where either the CR complexity is zero or source and target manifolds have the same signature.
