The author defines \((k_0,s)\)-degeneracy for smooth \(CR\) maps \(f:M\longrightarrow M'\) between generic real submanifolds \(M\subset \mathbb{C}^N\) and \(M'\subset \mathbb{C}^{N'}\). This pair of integers is a local invariant related to the concept of finite nondegeneracy of \textit{M. S. Baouendi, X. Huang} and \textit{L. P. Rothschild}, [Invent. Math. 125, No. 1, 13--36 (1996; Zbl 0855.32009)]. Maps with \(s=0\) are called \(k_0\)-nondegenerate. These notions are important to discuss various properties of \(CR\) maps, as rigidity, regularity, convergence of formal \(CR\) maps, determination by their finite order jets. In particular, the author obtains results of this sort under the additional assumption that \(M\) is of finite type according to \textit{J. J. Kohn} [J. Differ. Geom. 6, 523--542 (1972; Zbl 0256.35060)] or to \textit{T. Bloom} and \textit{I. Graham} [Invent. Math. 40, 217--243 (1977; Zbl 0346.32013)]. In the case where \(M\) and \(M'\) are both real hypersurfaces, he also obtains results for \(CR\) maps of constant degeneracy, in the cases where either \(M'\) is pseudoconvex, or the \(CR\) dimension of \(M'\) exceeds by one that of \(M\), \(f\) is transversal and \(M\) and \(M'\) nondegenerate at \(p_0\in M\), \(f(p_0)\in M'\).
