Let \((X,g)\) be a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold without conjugate points such that all horospheres have constant mean curvature \(h \geq 0\). The main result of this paper states that if moreover the curvature tensor and its covariant derivative are uniformly bounded then the following facts are equivalent: 1. \(X\) has rank one; 2. \(X\) has Anosov geodesic flow; 3. \(X\) is Gromov hyperbolic; 4. \(X\) has purely exponential volume growth with growth rate \(h\). In a previous paper the first author obtained the result for noncompact harmonic manifolds and Zimmer for asymptotically harmonic manifolds with compact quotients, so this paper generalizes these results.
