A famous result due to \textit{S. M. Gersten} [Adv. Math. 64, 51-85 (1987; Zbl 0616.20014)] says that the fixed point subgroup of an automorphism of a free group is finitely generated. The result was generalized in several directions. In particular, \textit{M. Sykiotis} [Int. J. Algebra Comput. 12, No. 5, 737-745 (2002; Zbl 1010.20016)] extended this result to arbitrary endomorphisms of virtually free groups. In the paper under review, the author gives a new proof of the result of Sykiotis using the theory of automata. Furthermore, he proves that in the case where the endomorphism is uniformly continuous for the hyperbolic metric, the set of regular fixed points in the hyperbolic boundary has finitely many orbits under the action of the finite fixed points. He also shows that in the case of an automorphism, these regular fixed points are either exponentially stable attractors or exponentially stable repellers.
