Estimations are given of the degree of nonlinear spline approximation in Besov-Sobolev spaces. Let a function from a Besov-Sobolev space defined on the unit cube in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\) be given. The function is approximated by splines with free partitions of the unit cube into subcubes and certain triangulations, where the number of polynomial pieces and the global smoothness of the splines are given. The basic idea is to construct good approximations by decomposing the function to be approximated into a series of \(B\)-splines with respect to uniform dyadic partitions. This is done in such a way that the coefficients in the \(B\)- spline representation are controlled by the smoothness properties of the function. This concept uses only the well-known direct and inverse theorems on linear \(L_ p\)-approximation.
