    Long-time behavior of solutions of the damped, nonlinear equation \[ u_ t- Mu+ u_{xxx}+ u^ p u_ x=0, \qquad x\in \mathbb{R}, \quad t>1 \] with initial data \(u(\cdot, 1)= f_ 0 (\cdot)\), \(x\in \mathbb{R}\) is studied. Here \(M\) is a Fourier-multiplier operator, which in Fourier transformed variables has the form \(\widehat {Mu} (k)=- | k|^{2\beta} \widehat {u}\), where \({1\over 2}< \beta\leq 1\), and \(p\geq 2\). The renormalization techniques for determining the long-time asymptotics of nonlinear parabolic equations pioneered by \textit{J. Bricmont}, \textit{A. Kupiainen} and \textit{G. Lin} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 47, No. 6, 893-922 (1994; Zbl 0806.35067)] are shown to be effective in analyzing nonlinear wave equations featuring both dissipation and dispersion. These methods allow the authors to recover recent results of \textit{D. B. Dix} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 17, No. 9/10, 1665-1693 (1992; Zbl 0762.35110)] in a way which is both transparent and has interesting prospects for generalization.
