    Die Verff. studieren die Frage, welche Verbände \(M_n\) (d.h. der Länge 2 mit \(n\) Atomen) als Intervalle im Untergruppenverband einer endlichen Gruppe auftreten können; das ist bisher nur für sehr spezielle \(n\) bekannt. Sie führen das Problem zurück auf gewisse Fragen über endliche einfache Gruppen, die sie hoffen, mit Hilfe der Klassifikation der endlichen einfachen Gruppen beantworten zu können. Auch in dieser Zurückführung wird die Klassifikation benutzt; wichtigstes Hilfsmittel aber ist eine verallgemeinerte Kranzproduktkonstruktion von \textit{B. H. Neumann} [Arch. Math. 14, 1-6 (1963; Zbl 0108.02602)]. Die Fragen, die noch beantwortet werden müssen, sind sehr speziell, fallen aber unter die beiden folgenden allgemeineren Aufgaben: (i) Man beschreibe alle Untergruppen von Automorphismengruppen einfacher Gruppen \(F\), die genau eine von \(F\) und 1 verschiedene Untergruppe invariant lassen. (ii) Man bestimme alle (in einem gewissen technischen Sinne) maximalen einfachen Abschnitte in nichtabelschen einfachen Gruppen.
