The authors try to find analogies of the spectral theory of Hermitian matrices for matrices over quaternions or octonions. Most of the basic properties are retained, provided they are reinterpreted (like characteristic equation or determinant) to take into account the lack of commutativity or associativity of the two fields, respectively. The octanionic case is only treated for matrices of size not exceeding 3.
