The authors describe the long time behavior of nonnegative solutions of the Lotka-Volterra systems \[ \dot u = \Delta u + u(a-u -c_k v),\qquad \dot v = \Delta v + v(d-v-\alpha_k c_k u) \] considered with Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n\). It is shown that if \(\alpha_k\) tends to a certain \(\alpha\in(0,1)\) and \(c_k\) goes to infinity then, for large \(k\), each solution corresponding to nonnegative initial data approaches an equilibrium. For this the authors make three assumptions concerning solutions in \(\Omega\) of the Neumann problems for equation \(-\Delta u=a u^+ + d u^-\), equation \(-\Delta u= a u^+ + d u^- - \alpha^{-1} (u^+)^2 + (u^-)^2\) and system \(\dot u = \Delta u + u(a-v)\), \(\dot v = \Delta v + v(d-u)\), respectively. They assume that the first equation possesses only trivial solutions, nontrivial solutions of the second equation are nondegenerate, and nonconstant bounded positive solutions of the last mentioned system approach distinct equilibria; simultaneously positive equilibria are hyperbolic and there are no ``circuits'' of heteroclinic positive orbits.
