The main result of this article is the following remarkable Theorem: Assume that \(A\) is a properly stratified algebra (for example, a quasi-hereditary algebra) having a duality preserving isomorphism classes of simple modules. Assume in addition that the characteristic tilting module \(T\) of \(A\) is also cotilting. Then the finitistic dimension (which equals the global dimension, if the latter is finite) of \(A\) is twice the projective dimension of \(T\). -- This implies, for example, that all of these algebras have even finitistic dimension. The theorem shows that in case of infinite global dimension, the characteristic tilting module can be used as a `test module' to compute the finitistic dimension. This result proves a conjecture stated in [\textit{V. Mazorchuk, A. E. Parker}, Commun. Algebra 32, No. 5, 1903-1916 (2004; Zbl 1075.16005)] in an even stronger form, as suggested by \textit{K. Erdmann} and \textit{A. E. Parker} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 194, No. 1-2, 95-111 (2004; Zbl 1062.16007)], for a large class of algebras, including Schur algebras and many algebras arising in representation theory of Lie algebras. Subsequently, \textit{V. Mazorchuk} has constructed a counterexample to the general conjecture [Algebra Discrete Math. 2004, No. 3, 77-88 (2004; Zbl 1067.16008)] and he has also formulated a modified version of the conjecture (loc.cit.). Further classes of Lie theoretic examples, for which the conjecture holds true, are discussed in the article under review. Moreover, connections are discussed with other homological dimensions, such as the good filtration dimension.
