This paper deals with the application of a preconditioning step to the Hermitian skew-Hermitian splitting (HSS) method. The result suggests that the technique is effective for handling non-Hermitian, positive definite and ill-conditioned problems with an optimal convergence rate. Some numerical results for a model problem (discretizing the convection-diffusion problem by finite differences) are presented.
