At first, using some fundamentals of geometry and some facts about variation methods, the authors give the variational formulation of the surface fairing problem and the solution. Then the results are used to contruct a smooth segmented surface, consisting of rectangular Coons' patches. At last, an example about the design of a hairdryer is given.
