    The author obtains the following results: (1) The group \(G=<a_ 1,...a_ n\); \(a_ 1^{\nu_ 1}...a_ n^{\nu_ n}a_ 1^{-\nu_ 1}...a_ n^{-\nu_ n}>\) has, when n is odd, non-one-relator subgroups of index j for every integer \(j>1\) which is prime to the \(\nu_ i\). (2) If H is a normal subgroup of finite index in \(G=<a_ 1,...,a_ n\); \(a_ 1^{\nu_ 1}...a_ n^{\nu_ n}>\) such that for some m, \((j,\nu_ m)=1\), then (a) the torsion-free rank of \(H/H'\) is \((n-2)j+1\), (b) if p is a prime such that \((p,\nu_ q)=1\) for some q; then the p- rank of \(H/H'\) is 0, (c) if \((\nu_ 1,...,\nu_ n)=1\), then \(H/H'\) is free abelian of rank \((n-2)j+1\). (3) A more general class is then considered which includes Fuchsian groups and a Riemann-Hurwitz-type formula for certain torsion-free subgroups of finite index is obtained.
