Using the reductions U(n)\(\supset U(n-1)\supset U(n-2)\supset..\). and SO(n)\(\supset SO(n-1)\supset SO(n-2)...\), formulas for infinitesimal operators of irreducible representations of the groups U(n) and SO(n) have been obtained by Gel'fand and Tsetlin. Up to now the analogous formulas were not obtained for the symplectic groups Sp(2n). The author gives a Gel'fand-Tsetlin approach to the representations of Sp(2n) which may lead to the derivation of formulas for infinitesimal operators. Namely, the closed subspace \(A_ n\) of the group algebra \(C^*(U(n))\) is constructed, which is spanned by the basis functions \(f_ M\), labelled by antisymmetric \(n\times n\)-matrices. A convolution structure is introduced into \(A_ n\) with respect to which \(A_ n\) is an algebra. It is shown that \(A_{2n+1}\) is isomorphic to the group algebra \(C^*(Sp(2n))\). Using this isomorphism the structure of a commutative Hopf algebra is defined in \(A_ n\) with odd n. The Hopf algebras \(A_{2n+1}\) and \(A_{2n-1}\) are connected by a natural projection, corresponding to the inclusion Sp(2n-2)\(\subset Sp(2n)\). The author conjectures that there exists a projection operator P on \(A_ n\), defined by the formula \(Pf_ M=f_{M'}\) (where \(M'\) is (n-1)\(\times (n- 1)\)-matrix) which gives a natural imbedding from \(A_ n\) into \(A_{n- 1}\). This operator has to separate multiple representations when we restrict an irreducible representation of Sp(2n) onto the subgroup Sp(2n- 2).
