    The author considers the following variational inequality \[ (1)\quad u\in K;\quad <Au+Hu,\quad v-u>\geq 0,\quad \forall v\in K,\quad K:=\{v\in H^{1,\infty}(\Omega):\;v\geq \psi,\quad v|_{\partial \Omega}=\phi \} \] where A is an elliptic operator and \[ (2)\quad Au=-D_ i(a^ i(x,u,Du)),\quad Hu=H(x,u,Du). \] The following theorem is proved: Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded domain in \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\), \(n\geq 2\), let \(\partial \Omega\) be of class \(C^{3,\alpha}\), \(\phi \in C^ 3({\bar \Omega}(x,2r))\), \(\psi \in C^ 2({\bar \Omega}(x,2r))\). Assume that the \(a^ i\)'s are of class \(C^ 2\) in x, u and of class \(C^ 3\) in the \(p\)-variable. Moreover let H be of class \(C^ 1\) in all its arguments. Then any solution of the variational inequality (1) satisfies the estimate \[ \| u\|_{2,\infty,\Omega (x,r)}\leq c \] where c depends on \(\| u\|_{2,p,\Omega (x,2r)}\), \(\| \psi \|_{2,\infty,\Omega (x,2r)}\), \(\| \phi \|_{3,\infty,\Omega (x,2r)}\) and other known quantities.
