Given a metric space \(Y\), \(\mathbb{K}(Y)\) denotes the set of all upper semicontinuous, compact-supported, normal fuzzy subsets of \(Y\). Let \(D\) be the metric on \(\mathbb{K}(Y)\) defined by \(D(f, g)=\sup_{0<t\leq 1}h(f^{-1}[t, 1], g^{-1}[t, 1])\), where \(h\) is the Hausdorff distance. The purpose of this paper is to give a purely topological criterion of compactness for subsets of the metric space \((\mathbb{K}(Y),D)\). The proof uses the compactness of a variational convergence, called \(\Gamma\)-convergence [\textit{G. Dal Maso}, An introduction to \(\Gamma\)-convergence, Progress in Nonlinear Differential Equations and their Applications. 8. Basel: Birkhäuser (1993; Zbl 0816.49001)], or hypo convergence [\textit{H. Attouch}, Variational convergence for functions and operators. Applicable Mathematics Series. Boston-London-Melbourne: Pitman Advanced Publishing Program (1984; Zbl 0561.49012)].
