The authors extend the asymptotic results of \textit{A. Gut}'s model of shocks [Bernoulli 7, No. 3, 541--555 (2001; Zbl 0994.62100)], in which failure is due to one of two causes: cumulative damage exceeding a threshold, or occurrence of an extreme shock -- whichever happens first -- to a mixed shock model, which is a combination of the standard cumulative damage model and the run shock model [\textit{F. Mallor} and \textit{E. Omey}, J. Appl. Probab. 38, No. 2, 438--448 (2001; Zbl 0987.60028)], where by the first occurrence of a rum of a pre-fixed length of extreme shocks causes failure. The mixed shock model thus corresponds to replacing the single extreme shock in Gut's model by a run of extreme shocks.
