The goal is to propose a fourth-order numerical method for the planetary geostrophic equation with an inviscid balance equation. The authors present a fourth-order numerical method, including spatial discretization of the transport equation on a regular grid, the determination of the velocity field on a staggered grid, and the time stepping. Moreover, the fourth-order convergence analysis is provided under an appropriate regularity assumption on the exact solution.
