The Glimm ideals of a \(C^*\)-algebra are its norm-closed two-sided ideals generated by maximal ideals of the center. All Glimm ideals of any von Neumann algebra are primitive. This result of H. Halpern is extended to any \(AW^*\)-algebra by an ingenious application of the generalized Hahn-Banach theorem by \textit{G. F. Vincent-Smith} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., III. Ser. 17, 72--90 (1967; Zbl 0146.37302)].
