The authors consider the question whether for some sequence \((e_i)\) whose span is dense in a Banach space \(X\) one can approximate in norm up to some \(\epsilon >0\) an element in \(X\) by a linear combination of the \(e_i\)'s using e.g., only integer multiples of some given \(\delta\) as coefficients. The authors concentrate on the case where the sequence \((e_i)\) is redundant, e.g., a frame. Motivated by some examples the authors introduce a new more restricted version of quantization involving an associated sequence space as well and study its implications. Some proofs involve volume arguments and are hence first formulated in the finite dimensional case.
