The paper deals with the difference equation \[ \Delta^4y(t-2)-\beta\Delta^2y(t-1)=\lambda f(t,y(t)), \quad t\in[a+1,b-1]\cap\mathbb Z \] subject to the boundary conditions \[ y(a)=0=\Delta^2y(a-1),\quad y(b)=0=\Delta^2y(b-1), \] where \(\beta,\lambda>0\) are reals. Using a symmetric Green's function approach, various existence, multiplicity and nonexistence results for solutions are given. In particular, existence and multiplicity of solutions follows from a fixed point result in cones due to Krasnosel'skii. Moreover, the authors give an existence result for a related semipositone problem relaxing the assumption of nonnegativity on the nonlinear term \(f\).
