After a general description of the amplitude expansion the authors apply it to two model equations. The first one is the modification of the well-known Swift-Hohenberg model for pattern formation as one of the simplest pattern for forming systems. It is modified so that it shows subcritical behavior instead of the usual subcritical transition. The second application is the extended Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-like equation introduced here to explore a bifurcation from infinity transition to weak chaos. For both equations the results of the expansion for periodic solutions are compared with direct numerical simulations of the full partial differential equations and the applicability and limitations of the expansion method are explored.
