The paper announces the construction of Neron models for admissible variations of mixed Hodge structure, in the framework of log geometry and log mixed Hodge theory that is being developed by the authors. The authors had previously constructed such models over a one-dimensional base, using toroidal partial compactifications of period domains [Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A 86, No. 4, 73--78 (2010; Zbl 1200.14024)]. To extend this to the higher-dimensional case, they introduce the concept of a ``weak fan'' (and give an example to show why partial compactifications by fans do not work here). The general construction is sketched in a concise but understandable way, with details to appear later.
