Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with \(1\). Let \(E\) be a finitely generated torsionfree \(R\)-module having rank \(e\) with a fixed embedding \(f:E \subseteq G \simeq R^e\). In the paper under review, the authors study on some divisors of \(E\) and \(G/E\), namely, Fitting ideals, generic Bourbaki ideals \(I(E)\), ideal norms \([[E]]_R\) and relations among them. In [\textit{D. Rees}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 101, 431--449 (1987; Zbl 0628.13004)] introduced a class of divisors ideals denoted by \(\det_{f}(E)\). In section 2, the authors show that \(\det_{f}(E) = F_0(G/E)\) is a representant of \([[E]]_R\), where \([[E]]_R\) is the norm of \(E\), a new class of ideals attached to \(E\), by \textit{O. Villamayor U.} [J. Algebra 295, No. 1, 119--140 (2006; Zbl 1087.14011)]. Also they show, the universal flattening property of the blow up of \(R\) at \(\det_{f}(E)\). Using this, the authors give an affirmative answer (cf. Proposition 2.3 and Corollary 2.5) to a question raised by \textit{A. Simis} et al. [Math. Z. 241, No. 4, 871--881 (2002; Zbl 1079.14060)]. Also refer \textit{A. Simis} and \textit{B. Ulrich} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 41, No. 1, 79--88 (2009; Zbl 1190.13002)]. In [\textit{A. Simis} et al., Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 87, No. 3, 610--646 (2003; Zbl 1099.13008)] developed the notion of generic Bourbaki ideals \(I(E)\). If \(R\) is a Noetherian local ring and \(e \geq 2\), then the authors prove that \(\mu(E)=\mu(I(E))+e-1\) (cf. Theorem 4.4). In section 5, the authors relate \(I(E)\) with the fitting ideals of \(E\). As a consequence of Theorem 5.3, any Bourbaki ideal is isomorphic to a fitting ideal (cf. Corollary 5.4). In section 6, by using the results from the previous sections, the authors show that the blow up at any generic Bourbaki ideal has a universal flattening property under birational morphisms.
