The paper is concerned with the wave equation in a bounded interval with a moving endpoint. The author introduce an energy functional that is not a conserved quantity in time, in contrast with the wave equation in cylindrical domains. By means of the generalized Fourier series and the Parseval's equality in weighted $L^2$-spaces, a sharp energy estimate for the uniform boundary-value problem is derived. Next, the boundary observability and controllability at a fixed endpoint and at a moving endpoint are shown. The observability constants are also explicitly given.
