    Let \(A_ i\), \(i=1,...,k\) be \(n\times n\) complex (real) matrices and let \({\mathcal U}_ n\) (\({\mathcal O}_ n)\) be the group of all \(n\times n\) unitary (orthogonal) matrices. Define \({\mathcal C}_ m(A_ 1,...,A_ k)\) (\({\mathcal R}_ m(A_ 1,...,A_ k))\) to be the set \(\{\) tr \(C_ m(A_ 1U_ 1...A_ kU_ k)| U_ 1,...,U_ k\in {\mathcal U}_ n\}\) (\(\{\) tr \(C_ m(A_ 1U_ 1...A_ kU_ k)| U_ 1,...,U_ k\in {\mathcal O}_ n\})\) where \(C_ m(A)\) denotes the \(m^{th}\) compound of the square matrix A. The author gives the complete characterization of the set \({\mathcal C}_ m(A_ 1,...,A_ k)\) (\({\mathcal R}_ m(A_ 1,...,A_ k))\), which extends some works of von Neumann, Parker, Fan, Marcus, Moyls, and Thompson.
