The paper contains two characterizations of ellipsoids in terms of sections and projections. These results can be considered as first steps towards the verification of two conjectures of which we state the following: Let a convex body \(C\) in \(\mathbb E^d\) \((d\geq 3)\) be contained in the interior of a continuous surface \(S\) homeomorphic to the unit sphere. If \(C\) `looks centrally symmetric' from each point of \(S\), then \(C\) is an ellipsoid. (This conjecture is related to the problem of the existence of caustics of billiard tables.)
