The author introduces the following notion: A monotone map $T$ from of a vector lattice $E$ or a subset of the positive cone of $E$ is a generalized orthomorphism, provided that $Tf$ is orthogonal to $g$ when $f$ and $g$ are orthogonal members of the domain of $T$. Some criteria are given for a monotone orthogonally additive mapping to be a generalized orthomorphism. A few applications are presented.
