Some mathematical aspects of the gas kinetic theory are investigated analytically. Based on the BGK approximation of the Boltzmann equation the relaxation problem of rarefied gases are analyzed. The kinetic entropy for the Boltzmann equation that is related to the gas entropy is defined. Several theorems are proofed. The main result of the paper is an explanation how the previously established for the one-dimensional isentropic gas flow inequally \[ \|\partial_x U_\varepsilon\|_{L^2_{x,t}}\leq {c\over \sqrt{\varepsilon}} \] (here \(\varepsilon\) is the relaxation parameter) could be deduced using the Boltzmann equation and the BGK approximation of the collision integral.
