Let \(G\subset\mathbb{C}\) be a Jordan domain with regular boundary \(L\). For \(p>1\) and for weight functions \(\omega\) satisfying a so-called Muckenhoupt \(A_p\)-condition, the author studies approximation by the \(n\)-th partial sums \(S_n\) of the \(p\)-Faber polynomial series in the Smirnov class \(E_p (G,\omega)\) which consists of all functions holomorphic in \(G\) and having nontangential limits a.e. on \(L\) lying in \(L^p(L,\omega)\). Let \(\psi\) denote the conformal mapping of the exterior of the closed unit disk onto the exterior of \(L\) (normalized by \(\psi(\infty) =\infty\) and \(\psi'(\infty) >0)\). Then the main theorem states that \[ \bigl\|f-S_n(f) \bigr\|_{L^p(L,\omega)}\leq c \Omega_{p, \omega_0} \left(f_0, {1\over n}\right), \] where \(\omega_0= \omega \circ \psi\), \(f_0= (f\circ \psi)(\psi')^{1/p}\), and \(\Omega_{p,\omega_0}\) is a \(\omega_0\)-weighted integral modulus of continuity of order \(p\) (and \(c\) is some constant). Moreover, this result is applied to the uniform approximation of the (appropriately normalized) conformal mapping of \(G\) onto a disk by Bieberbach polynomials.
