This paper deals with the construction of a nine-point difference scheme for approximating the solution of the 2d diffusion equation on structured quadrilateral grids. The method is based on 5 cell-centered and 4 vertex unknowns. The latter are obtained by a weighted sum of the neighboring cell-centered quantities. Various kinds of weights are listed, including two sets of new weights which are neither discontinuity nor mesh-topology dependent. The derivation of the scheme and of the new weights is both linearity preserving. Moreover, the scheme is computational efficient and can be extended to polygonal respectively non-matching meshes. Finally, the performance of the new scheme is investigated by applying it to several test cases considering the diffusion equation with continuous as well as discontinuous diffusion coefficients for different types of boundary conditions on a multitude of partly highly distorted and non-matching meshes.
