Let \((X,\omega )\) be a compact connected Kähler manifold of dimensions \(n\). An \(\omega\)-plurisubharmonic function \(g\) is called a Green function with poles at \(p_1 , p_2,\dots , p_k \in X\) if it is locally bounded away from the poles and if it satisfies the complex Monge-Ampère equation \[ (\omega +dd^c g )^n = V\sum m_j \delta _{p_j}, \quad m_j >0, \;\sum m_j =1, \] where \(V=\int _X \omega ^n \) is the total volume and \(\delta _{p_j}\) denotes the Dirac measure at \(p_j\). The Green function has isotropic poles if \(g(z) -\nu _j \log |z-p_j |\) is bounded near \(p_j\) for some \(\nu _j >0\). The existence of thus defined Green functions is an open problem and so the authors study some particular cases. They prove that with the additional requirement of isotropic poles such functions do not exist on multiprojective manifolds. More interestingly, they relate the open problem of the existence of a positive metric with bounded potentials in the first Chern class of the blow up of \(\mathbb P ^2\) at 9 points in general position to the equivalent problem: {\parindent3mm \begin{itemize}\item[--] existence of a Green function with 9 isotropic poles in general position on \(\mathbb P ^2\); \item[--] existence of a Green function with 1 isotropic pole in general position on a degree 1 Del Pezzo surface. \end{itemize}} A weaker definition is also considered -- of partial Green function, which is only required to satisfy an upper bound by some locally given (psh) functions near the poles. Using the Calabi-Yau theorem and a balayage construction, the authors show the existence of such functions even for smooth nonnegative \((1,1)\) currents in place of the Kähler form. The partial Green functions satisfy the homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation away from the union of their unbounded locus and the set where they attain their maximum. Both types of the Green functions are described in the case of \(\mathbb P ^n\) in terms of the rational maps from \(\mathbb P ^n\) to \(\mathbb P ^{n-1}\). They are related to some problems in complex dynamics.
