Cauchy and Gauß. Cauchy's reception in connection with Gauß (Q1407809): Difference between revisions

Gauss and Cauchy are considered as the giants of mathematics who introduced the revolutionary ideas and propagandized strictness in presentations. Their short comparative biographies are given, also their common research fields are characterized together with the achievements and mutual references of both of them. There are described Cauchy's printed works, which can be found in Gauss' library; two of them are with Cauchy's personal dedications. The reviews in \textit{Göttingische Gelehrte Anzeigen} (GGA) are analysed, written by Gauss' colleagues and disciples, and concerning Cauchy's works. The same is done with translations into German of Cauchy's books about calculuses, made by H. C. Schnuse. All cases are indicated, when H. C. Schumacher, one of the closest friends of Gauss, mentioned Cauchy in his letters to Gauss (but, had no resonance about it). There are three appendices. One of them is a list of all reviews in GGA on Cauchy's works, two others reproduce Gauss' letter of 26.03.1841 to Schnuse and Gauss' proposal of 06.08.1840 to \textit{Göttinger Akademie} to nominate Cauchy the foreign member.
