The paper is devoted to survey some recent advances on several different definitions of preimage (topological) entropy. The necessity of such definitions is motivated by introducing both measure theoretical entropy (defined by preimages of the map) and topological entropy (defined by forward images of the map). The clear and pedagogical paper contains examples on the circle (the angle-doubling map) and on symbolic spaces (subshift of finite type and others), which are explained in a clear style. The paper ends by pointing out some directions to investigate preimage entropies. The survey is recommendable to people interested in these topics as well as in topological and measure theoretic entropies.
