A new proof is given of Harsanyi's utilitarian cardinal welfare theorem [see \textit{J. Harsanyi}, J. Political Econ. 63, 309-321 (1955); reprinted in ''Papers in game theory'' (1982; Zbl 0503.90093)], which says that if social indifference obtains when all individuals are indifferent, then the social utility function is a weighted sum of the individual utility functions. Comments on the signs of the weights are included.
