The authors discuss particulate two-phase flows in the frame of what is called the Lagrangian approach, and the Eulerian approach. In the Lagrangian approach the fluid is considered as a continuum, and the particles as small single bodies. In the Eulerian approach, which should be usable at high particle concentration, both fluid and solid particles are considered as a continuum. The paper discusses the differential formulation of both approaches, and their solution for steady flow by means of available finite difference solutions. Results are presented for vertical pipe flow, and for a sudden expansion. The advantage and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed, more with regard to numerical problems than to the actual fluid dynamic phenomena.
