The authors discuss concepts from geometric measure theory on the metric space \((\mathbb{R}^n, d)\), where \(d\) is a Carnot-Carathéodory metric. More precisely, they study Minkowski content and perimeter, prove coarea formulas, and, as a main result, they obtain a variational approximation of the perimeter by means of degenerate elliptic functionals.
