\textit{V. I. Arnol'd} proved [Ann. Inst. Fourier 16, 319-361 (1966; Zbl 0148.453)] that a motion of a perfect incompressible fluid in a Riemannian manifold M is given by a geodesic in the group \(D_{\mu}M\) of all volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of M. The authors follow ideas of \textit{D. G. Ebin} and \textit{J. Marsden} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 92, 102-163 (1970; Zbl 0211.574)] to construct explicitly the geodesics in the case of a manifold M with boundary, from the geodesic flow of the double \(N=M\cup_{\partial M}M\). This is done by construction of a subbundle \(\Xi\) of \(TD^ sN\) \((=\) the tangent bundle of a Sobolev completion of \(D_{\mu}N)\) such that the geodesics are the integral curves of the projection of the geodesic flow of N to \(\Xi\).
