The author studies the projective symplectic varieties \(X\), i.e. the normal projective varieties with rational Gorenstein singularities with the regular locus of \(X\) admitting a non-degenerate holomorphic 2-form \(\omega\), from a view point of deformation theory. It is proved that if \(\pi: \widetilde X\to X\) is a symplectic resolution of \(X\) of dimension \(n\), then the Kuranishi deformation spaces \(\text{Def} (\widetilde X)\) and \(\text{Def} (X)\) are both smooth of the same dimensions. Moreover the natural map \(\pi_*:\text{Def}(\widetilde X)\to \text{Def}(X)\) is a finite covering, and \(X\) has a flat deformation to a symplectic \(n\)-fold \(X_t\) such that \(X_t\) is a small deformation of \(\widetilde X\). It is also proved that if \(X\) is a projective symplectic variety and \(\Sigma\subset X\) is its singular locus with \(\text{codim} (\Sigma\subset X)\geq 4\), then the Kuranishi space \(\text{Def} (X)\) is smooth.
