This survey traces the work, especially in the 1940s, of Leonid Kantorovich on the optimization problem that bears his and Gaspard Monge's names. Particular attention is paid to the metric on probability measures that the former introduced. The author, a mathematical grandson of Kantorovich, then discusses his own research in this area.
