The authors show that there is no possibility to characterize the norm continuity of semigroups (for general Banach spaces) in terms of the resolvent norm decay on vertical lines. Indeed, they find a new method for constructing \(C_0\) semigroups that allows them to give examples of noncontinuous \(C_0\) semigroups (in any \(t>0\)), such that the resolvent of its generator has a logarithmic decay at infinity along the vertical lines and such that the resolvent of its generator has a decay along the vertical lines arbitrarily close to a logarithmic one.
